If you are already starting to get discouraged about the goals you set for 2017, I’m here to tell you it’s not too late and you’re not alone.  By this time of year, we are at the half way mark of 2017 and by this time, every year I spend much of my time with my clients looking at what has been hindering their progress.  What I have noticed is the case with just about everyone, is it comes down to 3 things that keep folks from reaching their goals;

  1. You don’t have a simple system to keep you accountable and in action with grace and ease.
  2. You are looking at the whole thing all at once which puts you in overwhelm.
  3. You are not celebrating what you HAVE done. Most of us focus so much on what is not happening, imagine what happens when you shift that and celebrate what you HAVE done.

Long story short, looking at the big picture can be daunting. Instead, what I have found and what I have been teaching my clients in the 2o plus years I have been in this work, is what I call the 5% MORE Rule it makes for a more powerful way to move toward what you really want.

Think about it, if you are sitting at Thanksgiving dinner and you really want that pecan pie.  Do you go and grab the whole pie and eat it all at once?  NO!  You eat it one slice at a time.  Even with that slice, you eat it one bite at a time.  The same is true with with your goals.  Let’s shift and take it one bite at a time instead of looking at the whole journey it will take to get.  If your goal is bigger than where you are, which they usually are, when you look at the whole journey ALL at once that it what sends you into overwhelm and it makes you feel like you can never get there.  So here are 4 steps to apply the 5% more rule you need to get to your goals:

1.Narrow Down Your Big Plan to Bite Size Pieces. Think small step by steps instead of focusing on the whole thing all at once.

2. Celebrate Along the Way. No step is too small to celebrate so make sure you acknowledge the progress you are making. Celebrating each step you take on your journey is what helps you keep the momentum toward the end.  After all, why do you think every great team has cheerleaders?

3.Realize That Direction Is More Powerful Than Speed. If you are running fast in the wrong direction you will just need to turn around so focus on slow effective progress then trying to get things done quick fast & in a hurry. I have found that it is IN the journey toward your goal where you find the most valuable lessons so slow down and smell the roses.  Take time to take it all in.

4.Learn to Roll with It Rock With It. In other words, focus on progress, not perfection. You are perfectly imperfect so some things will happen just as planned and some will not. Making mistakes is normal so give yourself the opportunity to learn in those moments of breakdown and move on. Don’t be hard on yourself and think you messed up.  You didn’t,  you just needed a moment to recalibrate on your journey.

Stop allowing overwhelm to hinder your journey to reach that goal you greatly desire for yourself.  That’s the principle behind the “5% MORE” rule.  You just need to be strategic about what to do, when to do it and focus on small, focused daily progress to build the momentum and then fuel that momentum with celebrating your small wins along the way.  The end result will be steady movement and ultimately successfully achieving your goals that you may have never thought were possible.
